Educational Background: Master of Pedagogy (2001)
University of Lapland, Rovaniemi Finland.
Thesis Title: Teachers Attitudes Towards Bilingualism and the Sámi Language in the Finnish and Norwegian Primary School Contexts: A Comparative Analysis
Master"s of Indigenous Studies Thesis Title: For the love of thy Mother Tongue-Indigenous Language Revitalization: The Case of the Rama and the Inari Sámi languages
Thesis Topic/Question: Is indigenous culture reflected in the language revitalization processes in Rama Cay and Inari. If indigenous culture is reflected in language revitalization, how is it reflected and for what reasons? For what reasons is indigenous culture not reflected in language revitalization? What are the differences and similarities between these two contexts in relation to indigenous language revitalization?
The thesis is co-funded by the research project entitled “The Challenge of Indigenousness: Politics of Rights, Resources and Knowledge” at the Centre for Sámi Studies, University of Tromsø, financed by the Norwegian Research Council.
Motivations for applying to the MIS program: I chose to apply to this program partly because of my own ancestors’ experiences of assimilation. I wanted to learn more about indigenous peoples’ cosmology, history, and identity. This program fits my academic interests but I also see this program as an important part of my own revitalization of my Sámi and indigenous identity.
