Educational Background: Multi-disciplinary cand. mag. in Law Studies, Criminology, and Social Anthropology
University of Tromso (Universitehta Romssas)
Master"s of Indigenous Studies Thesis Title: Rama Indians and the Land: Current threats towards indigenous land rights in Rama Cay, Nicaragua
Thesis Topic/Question: Why are the Rama indians still facing poverty, violence, discrimination and marginalization when the Nicaraguan state is regarded as having very positive land rights policies for its indigenous peoples? The thesis seeks to answer this question by analyzing three actors within the indigenous land rights discourse and movement-the Nicaraguan State level, URRACAN University and other non-State actors, and the Rama Indians themselves-and how these levels relate to one another.
Motivations for applying to the MIS program: As an inland Sámi I have a general interst about the issue of land rights and with my background in Law studies this program was a good fit for me. I was curious because it was a program with a world-wide indigenous perspective.
