Master"s of Indigenous Studies Thesis Title: “A landless Indian is a dead Indian” – One living space: the relation between the Costa Rican authorities and its indigenous population regarding land rights
Thesis Topic/Question: From a historical perspective, how has the Costa Rican state with the use of force and the law appropriated indigenous land going back to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century? What mechanisms have the indigenous peoples been pursuing since then in order to rescue and maintain their lifestyles?
The thesis is co-funded by the research project entitled “The Challenge of Indigenousness: Politics of Rights, Resources and Knowledge” at the Centre for Sámi Studies, University of Tromsø, financed by the Norwegian Research Council
Motivations for applying to the MIS program: Having an indigenous background myself (the Brunka people), I was looking for a program that would give me the opportunity to achieve a higher degree in relation to my field of interest. I feel that both my academic and personal interests have been met through this program.
