Master"s of Indigenous Studies Thesis Title: Tradition and Modernity. The role of Árran – Lule Sami Centre in the revitalization process of the Lule Sami language in Tysfjord.
Thesis Topic/Question: The thesis discusses the effects of modernity on traditional culture in the cultural revitalization process. How can modernity be used as a tool for the promotion of a traditional culture and language? The point of reference for answering this question was the Árran – Lule Sami Centre’s language projects in the Tysfjord municipality, Norway. The institution represents a transition between modern and traditional, which raises several issues relevant to today’s indigenous reality.
Motivations for applying to the MIS program: As a result of Scandinavian and anthropological studies, my interests turned towards the indigenous people of Northern Europe, the Sámi. Moreover, their language and culture are related to the Hungarians’ due to the common Finno-Ugric background, which was also an important reason to get to know the Sámi better. Besides the culture, I was also interested in this program from a linguistic point of view because I had the opportunity earlier to study the Lule Sámi language in a course offered at my university in Budapest.”
