The executive minister had meetings with representatives of the National Research Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM) at the University of Tromsø. NAFKAM is responsible for the Norwegian contribution to the partnership.
The new agreement was signed in Oslo last Friday, prolonging the cooperation started in 1999. The parties will cooperate and exchange competence in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
In China medical care is equally divided between TCM and western medicine. Five-year training programmes are offered in both disciplines leading to a medical doctor’s degree. However, the government is now seeking ways to integrate the two traditions.
Also in Norway TCM is gaining grounds, as more doctors trained in the western tradition are learning about traditional medicine in order to enhance their range of possible treatments for their patients. Leading the way in this process is NAFKAM at the University of Tromsø. Although still small, compared to its Chinese counterparts, the centre plays an important role according to the visiting minister.
“It’s better with a small diamond than a big stone,” he replied.
Later this month a delegation from Norway will visit China to celebrate of the twenty-year-anniversary the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, which is also collaborating with NAFKAM.
