| From Partner meeting in Tromsø Nov. 05 |
The project is a collaboration between the Centre for International Health (UiTø/UNN), the Foundation Children's Oral Health Care Lira, Lira Regional Hospital, Makerere University, Department of Dentistry and Ministry of Health in Uganda.
The partnership has developed a project plan which includes the establishment of a dental clinic in Lira Regional Referral Hospital, student training at the clinic for Ugandan dental students and the development of public health out-reach programmes on dental health in Lira. The partnership is also planning to incorporate HIV/Aids research in the project. Early diagnosis of HIV/Aids is often possible through inspection of the oral cavity and may therefore contribute to early treatment and in reducing death of HIV/Aids affected in Uganda.
Additional plans are to develop the topic of Medical Peace Work within the curriculum at the Department of Dentistry at Makerere University and to develop and establish a broad network of health professionals in Norway and Uganda for the continued development of the collaboration, including the WHO country office in Uganda. Finally the clinic would be able to recieve Norwegian dental students for shorter training periods when the clinic is functioning properly.
The partnership received funding for a feasibility study from Fredskorpset and SEMUT (UiTø) and a study was carried out throughout the period August 2005 to January 2006. The feasibility study included one visit to Uganda by a Norwegian delegation and a reciprocal visit to Norway by the Ugandan counterparts.
The next step will be the exchange of four dental professionals between Norway and Uganda starting in September 2006.
