On Friday June 16, SIH organized a meeting regarding the future collaboration in Dentistry between the Institute of Clinical Odontology in Tromsø (Prof. Eino Honkala) and Northern State Medical University (Dr. Yury Sumarokov, Vice-rector for International Relations)

The Norwegian parliament decided in 2002 to establish dental education in Tromsø in order to secure a more stable dental manpower situation in the north of Norway. The first students entered in 2004.

The Institute of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tromsø has now recruited its first senior academic staff responsible for teaching and research. The Faculty of Medicine has approved the first research policy and the goals for research by the year 2010. As the most northern dental college in the world, this institute is having a special emphasis on oral health and services research in the arctic region.

The Faculty of Dentistry in Northern State Medical University opened 48 years ago. It is a main center of dental education and research in the Russian North. It is preparing the dentists for 6 regions of Russia (Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Karelia, Komi, Vologda and Nenets area). Up to 100 dentists are graduating from the Faculty every year.

It is very much relevant to collect epidemiological information available from these two northern regions, Tromsø and Arkhangelsk.  As Prof. Eino Honkala and Dr. Yury Sumarokov discussed together, it can be the possible partnership for the first phase of research cooperation between the dental institutions in Tromsø (Institute of Clinical Dentistry, UIT and Tromsø Regional Dental Health District) and in Arkhangelsk (Faculty of Dentistry, NSMU, Arkhangelsk Regional Dental Clinic for Adults and ARDC for Children).

Both sides are expecting great input which is very welcomed for the development of dental education and research in the North of Europe. Prof. Honkala , sais that the next step will be be done during his visit and direct contact with possible research colleagues from the Faculty of Dentistry in Arkhangelsk.

He suggested a list of topics related to the Research Policy of Institute of Clinical Dentistry for the discussion with Russian colleagues in October 2006:

  • Follow-up study on the oral health of the 35-year-olds in Tromsø and in Arkhangelsk
  • The trends of oral health of the young adults in Tromsø and in Arkhangelsk
  • Oral health and quality of life in Tromsø and in Arkhangelsk
  • Oral health behaviour of the schoolchildren in Archangelsk
  • Orthodontic treatment need among the schoolchildren in Tromsø and in Archangelsk
