SIH reports on first four years of activity

krystall + SIH 150pixels
Centre for International health (SIH) is in its fourth year of functioning and its role is to be the co-ordinating centre for international health work at the Faculty of Medicine (DMF) at the University of Tromsø (UiTø) and the University Hospital North Norway (UNN). The activities have started to give results in the form of a growing project portfolio, successful applications for funding and an increased interest in the work being done at the centre. The need for personnel has also increased following the growing project scope, and the centre added three persons to its team in 2005.

Solveig Wiesener

The current project portfolio stretches from North West Russia in the north to Malawi in the south and eastwards we operate as far away as Sri Lanka and China. The different projects are taking place over a large distance in other words. Why are we in all these places? The reason is that our expertise is demanded in these areas. Tromsø is unique in the world in the sense that it is, on a global scale, a ’rural area’, and therefore a good example of how to build a first class hospital and university, how to run an effective health service even with difficult infrastructure, and keep a high level of expertise in spite of large distances from the urban centres. This specific expertise and experience is needed in many of the world’s poorest countries and Tromsø can, and should, participate in supporting these countries.

An essential pillar in SIH’s work is the networking, lobbying and close collaboration with institutions, organisations and individuals locally, nationally and internationally. The core of all SIH’s activities and projects is that they are founded on professional expertise from the health professionals at UNN and UiTø. All projects are planned and considered institutional collaborations on equal terms with a focus on reciprocal gain of knowledge, expertise and experience.
