Objectives
This is an elective course for students studying the Master´s program in political science, but should be of interest asd an elective for students in sociology and history. The aim of the course is to give the students a thorough and critical insight into the status of classical and contemporary historical sociological research by focusing theories of the field and the most important questions and dominating trends in the research so that the students will have a conscious and independent understanding of historical sociology as an approach.
Contents
Historical Sciology, as a genre in the social sciences, can be said in many ways to continue the classic tradition in sociology and political science. Names like Weber and Marx are associated with problems and tentative solutions which, in social science research in general, have often been overshadowed by more limited and frequently "technocratised" hyphenated disciplines. Specialisation in itself is no evil, of course, but the kind of question which the classics posed must often lead to an "inter-disciplinary" fundamental attitude in order to elicit an answer. Historical Sciology makes relatively bold comparisons of structures and processes in various societies and historical periods. Macro-history, in its grappling with such problems, finds itself in a field of tension between, on the one hand, concrete historical research emphasising the characteristics of the sequences of development of certain countries and regions and, on the other hand, the generalising research in social sciences. The combination of elements from these two sources can be made in a number of ways and constitutes different research strategies. The course introduces the main classical and contemporary traditions in historical sociology as well as some of its main substansial topics: The unique thing in European political experience, which, at the transition from the middle ages to early modern times, gave Europe special characteristics and a "head start" compared with other countries and continents (the preconditions and consequences of the European breakthrough), and can be considered by looking at a number of mutually related topics: the transition from feudalism to capitalism in its various phases; state-building and the breakthrough in military technology from the late 16th century; the formation of a European system of nation-states; imperialism and empires, variants of nationalism; regime breakdowns and revolutions.
