STV-3057: Organizational Reputation Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring
| Objectives One widespread expectation with regard to organizations these days is that that they should be able to demonstrate to those around them, in a convincing manner, who they are and what they stand for and can offer. They are pressured to define what is unique about them, and are forced to compete with other organizations to demonstrate this in a clear and comprehensible fashion. Many organizations therefore use increasingly larger resources to develop and advance their identity in their environments. This may manifest itself in different forms of extrovert communication, which may be engaged through expressions such as "storytelling", creating a market and different forms of so-called "impression management".This is an optional subject forming part of the Master''s degree programme in organizational and management science (120 credits) at the Institute for Political Science. The main aim of this Master''s subject is to offer students at Master''s level knowledge of how organizations seek in different ways to influence perceptions of themselves in their own environments. There will be a particular focus on the connection between identity, communication and reputation. More specifically, the main aim is:- to place identity, external communication and reputation within an organizational-theoretical framework and to understand the phenomena to which these expressions refer- to provide knowledge concerning the background to organizations attempting these strategies, and which aims that are attempted succeed- to offer a knowledge ofhow identity and reputation are social constructions, but at the same time how strategic attempts are made to influence and design them. | Contents This course will look more closely at the latest trends concerning the way in which organizations relate to their environments and how internal self-awareness and desired reputation offer routes to their extrovert and expressive sides. These include:- Organizations'' attempts to define their identity: who they are, what they stand for and where they are going, including corporate values and visions- How organizations present their identity and differentiate themselves from other organizations, and attempt to present themselves as unique- Different ways of analysing organizations'' methods of presenting their identity and influencing public opinion and their own image, amongst other things by corporate branding, storytelling, offensive and protective impression management.- Issues linked to the gap between self-awareness and factual identity on the one hand, and desired public opinion and communicated identity on the other.- Factors in identity and public opinion, and crises of confidence and legitimacy. | Exam and assessment The examination process consists of a 6-hour invigilated examination.Grading scale: A-E (pass) and F (fail). A resit exam will be offered in the case of those awarded grade F. | Date(s) of written examination 05.06.2008 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Contact person/lecturer Mona Pettersen/Sylvia Steffensen | Recommended reading/syllabus
