ENG-2117: American Lives: In Their Own Words Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives This course develops an interdisciplinary approach to the study of culture. Using both historical contextualization and narrative analysis, it draws on a variety of genres, such as memoir, oral history, fiction, and film to explore the diversity of the American experience. | Contents Ever since 1782 when Jean de Crevecoeur asked the question, "What is an American?" people have been looking for an answer. The truth is complex and changing; it reflects the interaction of the differing life experiences among Americans. Although the search for the American Dream is often presented as an organizing principle, it is tempered by many factors including: class/place, newcomer/old timer, race/ethnicity, gender/sexual orientation. This course will examine the diversity of life experiences in the United States using the words of the participants in order to bring understanding to the roots of the dynamic nature of American society.
The core areas will be the African American experience, modern immigration, the American West, and environmentalism. An opening lecture will set each topic in context. Students will read a major work for each week backed up by short readings, some in class. The readings will also illustrate a variety of genres. A few short films and/or film clips will be presented. A packet of non-required readings for the future will be supplied to each student. | Form of teaching 24 teaching hours per term including seminars and lectures.
