SAM-1210: Saami culture history Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The students will gain knowledge of old Sami cultural history, as well as a better and broader understanding of the fundament of today''s Sami communities. This competence will be important for teachers and journalists, as well as for cultural workers and artists. | Contents The course provides an overview of Sami cultural history with an emphasis on the organisational principles of the traditional Sami hunting communities (Sami siida) and Sami traditional knowledge related to material and spiritual values. These topics will be presented in a historical light, looking at the development of Sami culture as we know it through written sources, and linguistic and material data.
The course is intended as a basic introduction to Sami cultural history, and no prior knowledge except for a good command of North Sami is required. | Form of teaching Teaching will consist of lectures, colloquia and short student presentations. In addition, the students are to write an academic essay.
The literature will be in North Sami, Norwegian, and partly in English. | Assessment Coursework Requirements: The students are to write an academic essay of approximately 5 pages on one of the topics discussed in the lectures. This essay is a part of the writing process which the students will go through during the course. The students will therefore present the essay to the other students in the course, and on the basis of feedback from the other students and from the teacher, they will have the opportunity to revise their work. The revised essay must be approved by the teacher before the student can take the final exam. This requirement is assessed with pass/ fail.
