PSY-1002: Psychological methodology Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives This course is a required course for the bachelor''s degree in psychology, and is part of the evaluation process for admissions to professional studies in clinical psychology.
| Contents The course is comprised of two halves:
History of Psychology (worth 5 study points): The purpose of this half of the course is to present an introduction to the historical origins and development of psychology. This section of the course also includes writing training, which depends in large part on the student''s own research and effort.
Research Methods (worth 5 study points). This half of the course will present an introduction and discussion of the most important concepts and principles used in psychological research. The purpose of the course is first and foremost to enable students to understand psychological science by a better grasp of how psychological research and theory development are done.
| Form of teaching Lectures: 12 hours of history and 12 hours of methods, plus lab and research tasks.
| Compulsory teaching Arbeidskrav metode, deltakelse i undersøkelse eller ref. av artikkel, Arbeidskrav historie, essay | Assessment At the end of the semester, there will be an examination of different kinds of questions about both halves of the course. The examination questions will be made by the BA Committee, with quality control by an external expert from another psychology department. We recommend that students check the course web-page for some example questions in order to prepare themselves for the way the question are formulated. The grading scale will be A-F. (Make-up exams will be given the following semester).
The course requires two assignments: History: Students must research and write a biography of a psychologist of their own choosing (3-5 pages). The biography will be graded pass-fail.
Methods: Students must also participate in a psychological study. At the start of the semester, several research projects will be presented which students can participate in. Students choose themselves which research project they wish to join to get credit from the experimenter running the study. Students who cannot participate in any of the research projects must write a summary (3-5 pages) of an empirical research article in order to get credit for this assignment.
