HIF-3021: Phonology II

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
Students should be able to show a thorough knowledge of the materials described in the course description. Students must also develop skills in oral presentation and argumentation, as well as the skills necessary for group work and individual project work.
Contents
This course traces the development of the phonological structure of the Germanic languages. Initially, we give a short introduction to early Indo-European and early Germanic, before we move on to the development of the modern languages. The last part of the course will address phonological innovations in the new English-based pidgin- and creole languages. Based on this historical background, we will discuss the universal forces that drive phonological change.
