BIO-2507: Fisheries Biology Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The students will; i) understand the prosesses (individual growth, recruitment, natural mortality, fish mortality) which affect the yield of a fish stock ii) understand the basis for modern stock analysis, how the single processes are put together iii) be able to carry through a stock analysis based on data from individual growth, numbers in age group and report this in a term paper iv) be able to explain the most important fish stocks biology and historical stock development. | Contents The subject gives an introduction to methods within methods of fishery biology to estimate fishing yield from stocks. Life course and catching history for our most important stocks of fish will be illuminated. Factors which decide variations in catch yield, individual growth, mortality and recruitment will be discussed. Methods for measurement and estimate of this elements will be learned, and it will also be focused on multiple stock research and multiple stock interactions. Methods for collecting data, analysis of age and practical statistical metods will be demonstrateted. The students will write a teoretical term paper. | Form of teaching The course has multiple teaching approaches | Assessment Term paper (counts 40 %) and oral exam (counts 60 %). | Examination semester Spring | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year. | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian | Homepage http://www.nfh.uit.no
