SPL-1003: Local Processes and Culture Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives This subject is compulsory in the Bachelor studies in civic planning and cultural understanding. The principal aim is to offer students a competence in the handling of analytical tools, which are important in an understanding of local processes.
| Contents Commerce between individuals is always culturally linked, and what takes place locally occurs under the influence of more extensive processes. In this subject training will be provided in the application of expressions and methods from anthropological commercial analysis. The teaching is based on three main themes: 1. Local society - within a larger context 2. Why do we study culture? 3. Field methods Central expressions such as status, role, identity and situation will be applied to examples from the students'' small-scale fieldwork. During the teaching, examples will be used taken from work and activities, to demonstrate local cultural variation as far as the meaning of gender, age, class and other forms of rank and belonging are concerned. The concern is also to illustrate some of the challenges that planners come up against as a result of cultural variation of this kind.
| Form of teaching Lectures (16 hours), seminars with student presentations (16 hours) and small-scale fieldwork.
| Assessment The recognized assignment is a report on the small-scale fieldwork (approx. 5 pages), with a self-selected assignment title. A deadline for the submission of the report will be announced. A collective grade will be awarded for the written assignment and an oral examination. Grading scale: A-E (pass) and F (fail). A resit exam will be offered in the case of those awarded grade F.
