HIS-3012: Europe in Africa - development or underdevelopment? Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents The aim of the course is to give an historical insight into the different manifestations of European activity in sub-Saharan Africa: trade, missionary activity, colonization and development aid, all seen in light of the concept "development". How was Africa integrated into the world economy and how did the European presence affect African society economically, socially and politically? What sorts of questions and arguments do we find in the choice of texts from historical and social scientific research literature, seen in relation to the question of whether the European presence had a stimulating or a restrictive effect on African development. Some texts can be seen as ways into an understanding of African thinking (for example those of Fanon, Mandela, Nkrumah and Nyerere), while most are accounts and interpretations of western and African historians. | Form of teaching The course has multiple teaching approaches. | Compulsory teaching Attendance in lectures and seminars | Assessment Students will write one essay of c.12 pages, to be assessed on a scale of A-E (pass) and F (fail). The course is open for re-sit examination early in the following semester.
