FYS-2001: Statistical physics and Thermodynamics Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents Introduction to probability, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. The subject includes the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic relations, free energi and chemical potential. Emphasis is placed on the microscopic (statistical) interpretation of thermodynamics. The course also includes elements of quantum statistics (Fermi and Bose gases, Einstein condensation).
Many physical systems/processes can only be explained at the microscopic (atomic) level. Examples are semiconductors, metals, white dwarf stars and nuclei. The basic knowledge provided in the course is necessary to understand such systems.
The course builds on Calculus 3 (Mat 1003), Mechanics (Fys 1001) and Quantum Mechanics (Fys 2000).
