BIO-3302: Eucaryotic transcription factors Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The purpose of the course is to offer the students insight into the complex realm of transcription, in particular transcription of protein encoding genes. Furthermore, the course describes how transcription factor activity is regulated, and in this context signal transmission is extremely important. The course also tries to link basic knowledge about transcription and signal transmission to inherited diseases and cancer. | Contents The course is divided into two large modules. Module 1 deals with eukaryotic transcription factors and covers the following topics: The RNA polymerases I, II, and III, DNA-binding domains, functions of transcription factors, functions of chromatin structures for transcription, viral transcription factors, transcription factors and disease, transcription factors and other biological processes. Module 2 deals with the main signal pathways in mammalian cells. The following topics will be dealt with: receptors, protein interaction motives, G-proteins, the main signal pathways, nuclear receptors and interactions between signal pathways. | Form of teaching The course is designed to be intensive (3 weeks of lectures every day 9-12 AM followed by a student presentation of an article. Presentations are oral and compulsory and need to be approved prior to final exam. The timing of each student presentation is agreed upon in advance with the student. The course is offered every second year. | Compulsory teaching Presentation | Assessment Written exam Grade type: alphabetical grades (A-F)
| Examination semester Spring | Date(s) of written examination 30.05.2005 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Type of course Theoretical and practical. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Contact person/lecturer Student Advisor Helene Eng, tlf.: 77 64 46 09 | Recommended previous qualifications BIO-2302 Molecular cellbiology, BIO-3313 Microbial and molecular genetics I | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian or English | Course overlap BIO-467 -1 15 sp BIO-467 -V96 9 sp | Timetables http://timeplan.uit.no/emne.php?department=ALLE&module=BIO-3302-1 |
