DOK-1012: Introduction to data processing and the use of data base

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
The students will gain a general insight into computer technology, and learn to master simple data processing. They will also gain an understanding of different forms of document organisation with an emphasis on databases and practical skills in building databases.
Contents
In the course, the organisation of documents is discussed, with a main emphasis on IT-based organisation: the function of computers, computer systems, internet, and databases in theory and in practice. The course includes extensive practical work in a computer laboratory.
The course is compulsory for programme students, but can also be taken as an independent course.
Form of teaching
The course is divided into a theoretical component, which is covered in the teaching, and an extensive practical component which consists of work in a computer laboratory, with the help of computer assistants. Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, project work, and supervision. Teaching takes place for approximately 10-12 weeks over a 21-week period, with an introductory component of 8-10 weeks followed by a project period of 2 weeks, and a final compulsory sum-up seminar where the exam project is to be presented orally.
Assessment
The examination is a project consisting of a database with instructions for users and motivation. The project is assessed with pass/fail, and is to be submitted digitally, the written part also as hardcopy.

Performance in the course will be assessed with pass/fail.
