ENG-3108: Colonial Discourses in British Nineteenth-Century Literature Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The course emphasises the development of central terms and concepts and analytical methods in the study of the motives and problems of a genre. | Contents This course will work with literary texts written in the nineteenth century in Britain. We will use three interrelated tools of inquiry: discourse analysis, linguistic analysis and narrative analysis to examine the constructions of "the Other", construction of ideologies of colonialism, and constructions of "the colony" as both imaginative and physical space in novels and other literary texts. While we will examine selected canonical texts that have recently been linked to colonial ideologies and discourses by authors such as Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, Charles Dickens, and Rudyard Kipling, a section of the course will also be focused on Ireland. In this part of the course, we will test Seamus Deane´s assumption that the Irish "national character" in the nineteenth century was associated with a particularized form of speech that could not "analyze the condition of the country under colonial rule"(Deane, Strange Country, 1997).
This course requiress a bachelor''s degree in literature or in language and literature with at least 80 ECTS in English or equivalent.
A good command of English is also required.
| Form of teaching The course will begin in week 2 of 2005 and meet continually for 12 -13 weeks of teaching. We will take two weeks of research and essay writing time during the semester, probably in weeks 10 and 11.
Each of the texts on the reading list will be discussed for four meetings of the course. We will read the texts in historical order. | Assessment Portfolio assessment: Short essay (40%) of approximately 4-6 pages; a semester assignment (60%) of approximately 15 pages.
