PSY-2578: Qualitative methods Work Load 5 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The purpose of the course is to give an introduction to qualitative methods, with emphasis on the research interview and observations.
| Contents The course gives an overview of the qualitative research traditions phenomenology, grounded theory, case studies, biography and ethnography. The focus of the course is mainly concentrated on phenomenology and the narrative research interview. The students are trained to evaluate the relationship between quantitative and qualitative methods.
| Form of teaching Apart from traditional lectures, the course comprises work shops and practical training. The data collection for the exam starts in the course of the lectures. For this reason the students are encouraged to follow the educational program, even though the lectures are not obligatory.
| Assessment The course in qualitative methods is terminated by a home exam. The home exam is a report developed in the basis of empirical work. The exam is evaluated by the lecturer and graded from A to F. It is possible to choose between two different designs for the home exam. In the first design, three students work together in a group, and these students cooperate on a common report. In the second design, each student works alone and has no co-authors on their home exam.
