PSY-1001: Introduction to psychology Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Objectives This course is a required course for the bachelor''s degree in psychology, and is part of the evaluation process for admissions to professional studies in clinical psychology.
| Contents This course presents an introduction to psychology as a science, including the key questions, theories, and research results. This means that the course shall cover the most important contributions that psychology has made to the understanding of humans, but also to the understanding of the behaviors of other species. In contrast to PSY-1000, this course will have a greater focus on research and theory in order to deepen the students'' understanding of psychological phenomena. Furthermore, this course will present a picture of the full breadth of psychology. The contents of the course will largely follow the topics in a standard introductory psychology textbook.
The course topics are organized in sections, at the moment:
(1) Introduction, research methods; (2) Biological basis of behavior; (3) Cognitive psychology; (4) Learning, motivation, emotions; (5) Social psychology; (6) Personality, abnormal psychology and treatment.
For each section, additional readings will expand upon the central themes of the field.
| Form of teaching The course is comprised of lectures (usually 8 -10 hours per section), plus seminars and demonstrations. Teaching depends to a high degree on the students'' preparation and activity. Seminars led by graduate students will supplement the lectures. These seminars are specifically tied to the textbook and the lectures.
| Assessment There will be three exams in PSY-1001. Two of the exams will be exclusively about the textbook, and these will be of several types: One exam for sections (1), (2) & (3) from the textbook and one exam for sections (4), (5) & (6). The third exam is a 5 hour short-answer test covering all required readings, including both the textbook and the supplementary readings. The exam questions will be made by the BA Committee, with a quality check by an expert from another psychology department. We refer students to check the course web-page for some examples of how the questions will be formulated.
Within three weeks after the exam (multiple choice tests) a report of the items answered correctly will be posted. When the semester is finished, the results of all three exams will be totaled up and a final grade decided, using the scale of A-F. There will not be any opportunity to take a make-up exam until after all exams for the semester have been completed. Make-up exams will be offered during the following semester.
Comments and complaints about the exams: [FØLGENDE VIL BLI FORENKLET, OGSÅ I DEN NORSKE VERSJONEN]
From the day of the exam, for a period of two weeks, students can send in Comments about the exam questions. These will be posted on the PsykForum for discussion. For one week after the scores are announced, students can send Internal Complaints about their scores. These will be considered and answered by the BA Committee.
The BA Committee''s response to these complaints will be posted on the PsykForum. This process of Internal Complaint has no effect on the student''s possibility to make a formal External Complaint according to the regulations governing examinations. Students must send External Complaints to the Institute of Psychology within three weeks after the student is, or ought to have been, aware of the reason for the formal External Complaint, according to the University and College Law §51.
