PSY-2020: The psychology of attudes

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
1) Gaining knowledge about classic themes in attitude theory and a selection of contemporary perspectives on attitudes.
2) Acquiring practical skills with respect to a chosen topic (e.g., intervention planning, developing a persuasive message, designing an experimental study).
3) Develop writing skills.

Contents
Attitudes are basic evaluative responses, which are important driving forces of choices and behavior. Attitudes are involved in a large variety of phenomena, ranging from fast and routine responses (e.g., choosing what to eat for breakfast) to important life decisions, such as choosing your partner. Whereas some attitudes are easy to detect, for instance a person wearing a Greenpeace button, others may be more difficult to measure, such as prejudiced attitudes toward minority groups. Some attitudes are stable and difficult to change, others may change overnight. Attitudes also operate or be influenced outside our awareness. Attitudes are often studied in order to predict behaviour, but also to learn more on how to change behaviour. Behaviour change is often the aim of persuasive communications, which can be seen, for example, in advertising or health promotion campaigns. In short, this course will take you on a tour along a large variety of aspects and phenomena all related to attitudes.

The course consists of three activities: lectures, class projects, and an individual essay. There will be lectures about basic concepts related to attitudes, attitude structure, attitude-behaviour relations, persuasion and attitude change, and intervention planning. In addition, a number of lectures will be given on a selection of attitude-related topics. Students will work in small groups on class projects, and write an essay on an individual basis. A written exam will be given at the end of the course.

The complete course will be taught in English.
