BIO-1001: Cell and molecular biology Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The course should lead to an understanding of the fundamentals of modern cell and molecular biology and of how these disciplines are used for purposes of diagnosis, research and industry; the organisation and function of micro-organisms, elemental biochemistry, microbiology and classical and molecular genetics. The lab work should provide practice in modern biochemical, genetic and cell-biological methods. | Contents The course will provide an introduction to cell structure and functions, to elementary biochemistry, microbiology and to classical and molecular biology. Lab exercises will provide training in modern biochemical, genetic, cell biological and microbiological techniques and methods.
Teaching of biochemistry will explain DNA structure and functions. The students should understand how genetic information is organised in the cell and how it is relayed by means of mitosis (cell division) and meiosis (germ cell division) Fundamentals of classical genetics and of how mutation can alter cell properties will be discussed. A few examples of how gene technology can be used in practice will be demonstrated.
Teaching of cell biology will deal with the molecular basis for cell structure and organisation. Central topics will be membranes and passage across membranes, the endomembrane system and organelles, signal transmission, the classification of proteins, the cytoskeleton, energy conversion and metabolism.
Teaching of microbiology will provide an outline over the functions and significance of micro-organisms, mainly in view of morphological, physiological and functional (ecological) aspects, including the structure of micro-organisms, metabolism and growth. The significance of micro-organisms in the eco-system will also be explained as well as the interactions of host-organisms (normal micro-flora, symbiosis, pathogenesis) and the role of micro-organisms in biotechnology and bioremediation.
| Form of teaching 72 academic hours of lectures (9 double periods for each part) 72 academic hrs of student colloquia/seminars, 64 hrs of lab-work (4 x 4-period exercises for each part, compulsory attendance). Lab protocols need to be handed in after each lab exercise. All the records need to be approved prior to final exam. Self-test tools will be available to student colloquia. | Compulsory teaching Laboratory course biochemistry, Laboratory course cell biology, Laboratory course cell biology, Laboratory course micro biology | Assessment Written exam (6 hours). Alphabetical grades (A-F) | Examination semester Spring | Date(s) of written examination 06.06.2005 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Type of course Theoretical and practical. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first year. | Contact person/lecturer Student Advisor Helene Eng, tlf.: 77 64 46 09 | Recommended previous qualifications BIO-0001 Basic Biology, KJE-1001 Introduction to chemistry and the chemistry of biology | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian | Course overlap BIO-100C -1 12 sp BIO-103 -1 15 sp BIO-100C -H03 12 sp | Timetables http://timeplan.uit.no/emne.php?department=ALLE&module=BIO-1001-1 |
Administrativt ansvarlig for emnet er studiekonsulent Helene Eng, IMB. Faglig ansvarlige: professor Eirik Bjørklid (Biokjemi), professor Ugo Moens (Genetikk), universitetslektor Mona Eilertsen (Cellebiologi) og professor Jan Olafsen/ Anton Liamer (Mikrobiologi). |
