STV-3021: Democracy and globalisation

Work Load
20  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
STV-3021 is an elective course for students studying in the Master''s program in political science, but can also be of interest as an elective for students in other Master''s programs at the university.
Contents
The object of this course is to present the ongoing debate about the possibilities for democratic governance in an age when it is claimed that nation states no longer have control over market actors while at the same time are pressured by international NGOs. The course addresses both the pessimistic arguments and how different optimistic arguments attempt to secure democratic governance across nation states. The lectures delve into the changes in citizenship, the significance of human rights, and the significance of international civil society. An important component of the international discussion is linked to the development of the EU, thus the situation in Europe will be addressed in a number of the lecures.
- What challenges are we confronted with in the development of democracy outside of the nation state?
- Which political conditions challenge national sovereignty?
- How can the EU''s democratic deficit be reduces?
Form of teaching
The course has multiple teaching approaches
Assessment
One take-home assignment and one written exam.

The exams consist of:
- One 6 hours written university-based exam
- One term paper (approx. 4000 words) on a topic of your choice.
