The course will focus on the beginnings of the English novel in its modern form, illustrated in works by Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens. The aim is to give students a detailed appreciation of five novels of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, along with an understanding of the history and theory of fiction at a crucial moment of change in British literary history. We will focus on a picture of the social and cultural background to each novel, and we will spend time discussing both a theory of narrative fiction and criticism of each novel. | Undervisning

The course meets for lectures and discussions for twelve weeks for five hours a week.

3 hjemmeoppgaver
The course requires one short response paper (3-4 pages), and two longer papers (the first will be 5-7 pages, and the second will be 10 pages). The final essay is a research paper in which the student will submit one draft and then have the opportunity to revise. The first essay is 20% of the mark, the second 30% of the mark, and the final research project is 50% of the mark.

Essay no. 3 due week 20 of the calendar 14.05.2004.
Emnet evalueres med bokstavkarakterer.
