| Innhold This course will work with literary texts written in the nineteenth century in Britain. We will use three interrelated tools of inquiry: discourse analysis, linguistic analysis and narrative analysis to examine the constructions of "the Other", construction of ideologies of colonialism, and constructions of "the colony" as both imaginative and physical space in novels and other literary texts. While we will examine selected canonical texts that have recently been linked to colonial ideologies and discourses by authors such as Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, Charles Dickens, and Rudyard Kipling, a section of the course will also be focused on Ireland. In this part of the course, we will test Seamus Deane´s assumption that the Irish "national character" in the nineteenth century was associated with a particularized form of speech that could not "analyze the condition of the country under colonial rule"(Deane, Strange Country, 1997).
