SVF-3103: Constructing Stories - Montage, Narration and Editing Vekting 20 studiepoeng | Mål This subject is obligatory for the International Master in Visual Cultural Studies. | Innhold The subject will explore how to convey ethnographic stories, to create plots enabling these forms to evolve within social sciences. It is practice-based where writing and filming are constantly associated and where students constantly will have the possibility to put into practice the knowledge conveyed in theoretical lectures. The overall aim of the subject is to learn how to film by thinking montage and editing; how to interpret technically and expressively a film, learning filmic language and a narrative structure and how to identify some paradigms which are recurring in storytelling; to develop some skills in writing for cinema and documentary.
The subject consists of four parts. 1) Narrative and montage, 2) Film seminar, 3) Technical editing and 4) the editing of a film of 10-15 minutes duration.
1) The course ?Narrative and montage? provides some examples of the paradigms, models, some of the patterns or recurrences in narrative and in the practice of storytelling. Storytelling in a filmic form is conveyed by means of motion pictures and sound, oral and written texts, is plotted in various genres and it is constructed by the researcher in an ongoing dialog and shared authorship with his social actors. The course includes an analyse of various storytelling-practices: from the oral tradition to the tale, from fiction, novels, movies to journals, chronicles, descriptions, dialogues, monologues, drama etc. The basic film form will be analysed through montage and its technique: editing. Montage is the theoretical approach consisting in shaping the space-time dimension of each film through cutting and matching series of scenes. Examples from history of montage will be shown and basic editing language acquired through exercises tackling the aspects of rhythm and pace, rupture and continuity. 2) In the ?Film seminar? films from early cinema till the most recent tendencies will be screened in their full length. The seminar will give an introduction to different genres within ethnographic- and documentary filmmaking. An important context for the presentation of the films screened will be the teaching within VCS 303 and other subjects. This is also a forum of discussion which demand active participation from the students. 3) The course in technical editing gives an introduction to the use of the Media 100 editing suites. 4) The editing of the film, which has already been shot as a part of the subject VCS 301/302, gives the possibility to apply the learning from the other subjects and from previous parts of VCS 303 into the making of a filmatic story. The editing will be conducted, under supervision of the responsible teacher, by the team of two which did the shooting.
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, practical exercises with individual supervision. Course attendance is mandatory, i.e. only valid absences will be approved. | Undervisning Emnet har varierte undervisningsfomer | Vurdering In addition to formative evaluations of the exercises conducted along the course, there will be a summative evaluation of the film produced. | Eksamenssemester Vår | Emnenivå/studieår Første eller andre året på masternivå. | Emnetype Teoretisk. | Pensum Se hjemmeside. | Undervisningsspråk Norsk |
