SOA-3006: Indigenous Culture and Ethnicity Vekting 10 studiepoeng | Mål The course aims to give the students some analytical tools for attaining a comparative and reflexive perspective on indigenous conditions worldwide. It presents various definitions of the concept of culture and discusses cultural differences as background for development and change of ethnic boundaries with an impact on the situations of indigenous peoples. It gives a theoretical background for an understanding of similarities and variations in the relationships among indigenous peoples and between indigenous peoples and majority populations. It discusses the impact of modernization and globalization on indigenous identities and cultures, and finally, it gives a basic introduction to qualitative methods in the study of ethnic minority relations. | Innhold The course starts with a critical discussion of the concept of indigenuity as seen from an anthropological point of view. It then gives an overview of how ''the Other'' has been represented in Western public and academic spheres since the time of European expansion, thereby illustrating characteristics of ethnocentrism and mechanisms of stereotyping. The concepts of ''culture'', ''ethnicity'' and ''identity'' and their interrelations are discussed. These concepts will then be related to processes of social and cultural change, viewed in the perspectives of traditions and modernity. Finally, the relationship between national and indigenous identifications will be discussed and related to ethnopolitics and to processes of globalization. Ethnographic presentations will be used to illustrate the themes. In order to facilitate the MIS students'' later data collection in fieldwork, the course will also consider some problems and challenges in the methodological approach to the study of ethnic relations. The lectures will be grouped in seven parts:
1. Introduction: On the definition of indigenuity. 2. Anthropology and ''the native''s point of view. 3. ''The Other'' as seen through Western eyes since the time of the ''discoveries'' and colonization. 4. Ethnicity, ''race'' and nationalism. 5. The claim of aboriginality: Recognition of identity and belonging. 6. Problems of culture change: ''Tradition'' and ''modernity''. 7. Studying indigenous groups: Ethical and methodological issues. | Obligatorisk forkunnskapskrav SOA-1001 Kulturforståelse.
