SVF-3101: Film Form: Re-presenting reality through the Camera Vekting

This unit is obligatory in the study of V.C.S. both as part of the International Master Course and as part of a Specialisation Course open to Master students in Social Science. | Innhold
This unit will focus on film form and cinema language with an emphasis on the shooting practise: looking at and representing reality through the camera.
The course is both theoretical and practical, aiming to prepare the students - both in their way of thinking and operating - as filmmakers capable of using the camera in their field-works as a tool of observation and representation of the chosen reality.
Throughout the course the students will also get technical training and feedback in the use of the equipment (both Camera and Sound) and realise a range of exercises, from still photography to video recording aimed to confront them with a growing range of complexities in elaborating a filmic discourse and to develop their skills ? both technically and expressively - in the art of telling stories with images. Analyses and interpretation of the ?rushes? will be an ongoing part of this learning process also focused on the acquisition of an awareness of how different ways of filming imply different ways of looking at and representing reality, different ways of producing knowledge.
At the end of the course the students will have two weeks fieldwork in Tromsø, during which they will realise the shooting of their exam film (that will be edited in the Spring). The research, discussions and development of the ideas for their Exam film ? which will be realised in teams of two ? will form part of the course. Before going to field-work they will have to write a film-synopsis as part of their project description.
The theoretical lectures on cinema language, on the different approaches to filming reality and their implications will include looking at a selection of film extracts from early cinema till the most recent tendencies. | Undervisning
