GEO-3102: Geochronology/Unstable Isotopes

Work Load
5  credits (ECTS)
Contents
The course gives the theoretical background for the use of radioactive isotopes and their daughter products in dating geological materials/processes. This includes the various radioactive decay mechanisms. Further, the course goes through the most common geochronological methods, such as the Rb-Sr, K-Ar, Sm-Nd and U-Pb methods. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating dating methods in relation to particular geologic problems and possible sources of error. The course also addresses the use of radiogenic isotopes (Sr, Nd and Pb) in defining magmatic sources and contamination.
