SVF-3112: The crossing view-the qualitative research process Vekting 10 studiepoeng | Mål The subject is obligatory for the Specialisation in Visual Cultural Studies | Innhold The main aim for this course is to explore the qualitative research method in cross-cultural setting. During the course will the students conduct several practical exercises. These are done in ?cross-cultural? couples; Norwegian students will work with International students. Through collaboration are the students learning about challenges in cross-cultural learning and communication. In these couples are the students going to realise a fieldwork (using camera (see VCS-301)), which will give the data for the paper that will be written in the end of the term.
The course focus on the research as process; and the students will deal with core theoretical ideas on qualitative method in cross-cultural settings. The construction of theories in ethnographic research relies on all steps taken in the research process: how do you focus your theoretical interest on social matters situated in time and place? What do you notice and observe and from which perspectives? How do you record your findings? What kind of relationships do you build with the people involved, and how should they be included in the research-mediation process? And then; what is knowledge within science based on qualitative research?
Focusing on the above questions, the course aims to give basic training in qualitative research, and then especially on issues related to: · How to identify a field of interest that can be explored using a qualitative method · How to raise questions that are of such a nature that they can be applied ? or operationalized. · How to develop cooperation skills and be aware your own role as researcher · How to use analytical tools and concepts · How to write an essay reflecting the field of interest from the fieldwork, and apply theories to gain an ability to give possible explanations of social processes.
The course is both practical and theoretical, and many of the challenges of doing qualitative research will be re-discovered as the students get involved in their own projects. The central effort is to reveal the process of doing ethnographic description, where the researcher meets the field, and later develop theories to meet social realities. How can an understanding be built, and how can this understanding be used to explain social processes?
This course will be followed by a close study of two monographs that?s give an thoroughly insight the ?Anthropological project?.
