Objectives
The four centuries 800-1200 saw a backward western Europe develop a strong economy, ordered society, and national states. These changes were equally marked in Scandinavia and northern Europe generally, which in addition saw the introduction of a common, Christian, European culture. In 800 a region of small, local kingdoms and chiefdoms, some under a weak Danish hegemony, by 1200 there were national monarchies in Norway and Sweden as well as Denmark; to the east Swedish power was extending into Finland, and the first Russian state had emerged. Settlement in Iceland had led to a new state with a distinctive economy and culture. The patterns of lawlessness and piracy associated with the northern peoples gave way in this period to more peaceful and constructive relationships with their neighbours (although violence remained a prominent feature, internally). Economic, political and cultural developments transformed relationships throughout the north, and thus introduced new factors to the established relationship between the Norwegian and Sami peoples. The commercializing trend in western Europe had also involved the northern region, as earlier patterns of trade in luxury goods were supplemented by bulk trade in new products such as fish and wool. In studying these themes, the course will place special emphasis on the sources historians use for this period ¿ chronicles and sagas, but also archaeology.
