FYS-3002: Techniques for investigating the near-earth space environment Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Master level course. | Language of instruction Norwegian, or English by request | Examination semester Spring | Contents Modern exploitation of space and the need for studies of the effects of Space Weather on the terrestrial and near-Earth environment require detailed understanding of the morphology and behaviour of the upper atmosphere. To accomplish this, there is a variety of sophisticated techniques and instruments that range from ground-based to space-borne. The course gives an introduction to some of the principal techniques and instruments commonly used in atmospheric, ionospheric and magnetospheric research. The main emphasis will be placed on the Incoherent Scatter Radar Technique but auxiliary instruments such as magnetometers, riometers and optical equipment will also be discussed. The course will be taught through a combination of instruction and practical exercises and may include fieldwork at the major observational sites in Northern Norway. | Recommended previous qualifications FYS-2007 Statistical signal analysis, FYS-2009 Introduction to plasma physics, FYS-3003 Cosmic geophysics | Form of teaching Lectures: 40 hr Project work/Seminars: 40 hr
