Objectives
The course provides historical, analytic, and theoretical insight into literary representations of the Northern regions.
Contents
The students will work with prose written about and in the Northern regions. The course moves through history from descriptions of the Northern written by travellers and authors from central Europe to the time when the Northern, Sami and Russian authors themselves started to write about their own region. Do these authors relate differently to the traditional perceptions of the Northern as the infernal/the sublime, the unenlightened/the exotic, the masculine/the feminine? What happens when literature places the peripheries in the centre?

The course will also explore theoretical approaches, research that focuses on the sense of space in literature, the novel and the nation, gender and postcolonialism.
Form of teaching
The course runs for the whole semester and includes a period devoted to reading and writing. Tuition will be based on seminars with a high degree of student participation. Tuition will be given in Norwegian. The texts will be studied in their Nordic languages or English.
