The course gives an introduction to basic topics regarding anthropological studies of interaction and social organization, social classification, and communication through symbols. It is emphasized that the course shall be relevant for understanding contemporary culture and social interaction in modern contexts. This would concern, among other things, identity handling connected to commercialization, sub-cultures and modernity. The course will focus on African-American sub-cultures, as well as Western sub-cultures and history, in addition to emphasis on a cultural continuity between different forms of popular culture and stiles ¿ and the social logic of innovation. Popular music and connected sub-cultures will be especially focused on, together with changes in popular culture ¿ technology (hacking), drugs/alcohol and consummation.

Home-based exam and oral examination. The exam is divided into two:

a) a project essay which can be written individually or in groups of two students. The length of an essay written by a group should be about 7 000 words (approximately 18 pages), while individual projects should be about 4 500 words (approximately 12 pages).

b) an individual oral exam based on obligatory readings, as well as questions regarding the student¿s project essay.

Both parts of the examination will be graded using a scale: A-E for pass, F for fail.
