The course gives a more thorough treatment of themes introduced in the basic sedimentology course, with emphasis on understanding transport and depositional processes, sedimentary textures and structures, and sedimentary architecture in different depositional environments. Processes and products in glacial, fluvial, deltaic, littoral, shallow marine, deep marine, lacustrine and aeolian environments, as well as mass transport and synsedimentary deformational processes, are described. Emphasis is placed on clastic sediments. Familiarity with processes, textures and structures will be gained through laboratory and field exercises. Field studies will be based on modern and late Quaternary depositional environments in the Tromsø region, where active processes and recent sediments can be compared with analogous sediments exposed in sections. | Recommended previous qualifications
