The course will provide students with in-depth knowledge of modern Norwegian and, to some extent, of Scandinavian, language structure (morphology and syntax) - in the written as well as the spoken language. Special attention will be paid to North-Norwegian language conditions.
The course does not qualify graduates to teach in Norwegian schools.
Contents
Studying modern language structure will give students a thorough knowledge of modern Norwegian morphology and syntax and to some extent also that of the other Scandinavian languages. The morphology component is primarily focused on the declension systems in the two written Norwegian standards, bokmål and nynorsk. Students should also have some knowledge of Norwegian word formation. The syntax component will give students a basic knowledge of sentence analysis.

Required previous qualifications/ courses: General entrance requirement. In addition it is necessary to have Norwegian skills equivalent to NOR-0100 Norwegian for foreign students: A one semester course which builds on Norwegian level III/ "Bergens-testen".

Recommended previous qualifications/ courses: NOR-1010/1020 or equivalent.
Form of teaching
The course is given in the spring term. 52 hours (26 double classes) in total. Instruction will be given in the form of lectures, seminars and exercises. Teaching-free periods are used for individual study and for writing papers.
Exam and assessment
Assessment method:
School exam (6 hours) at the end of the semester.

Students do not have to master both nynorsk and bokmål, and the practical language requirements are also lower than for students taking the ordinary Scandinavian language or literature courses.

Grading: Letter grades (A-F)

Exam language(s): Norwegian, Danish, Swedish.

Date(s) of written examination
31.05.2006
The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester.
