LIN-1012: Phonology Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Spring | Objectives Students will gain knowledge of universal and language-specific characteristics of the phonology of natural languages, as well as skills in formal argumentation and analysis of data from different languages. | Contents Humans have the ability (rule-governed creativity) to produce an infinite number of new sentences using a limited number of words and rules. The same rule-governed creativity also characterises our knowledge of the sound structure in our native language. Using a limited number of sounds we can in principle form an infinite number of new words. We cannot combine sounds randomly, but follow certain principles; gnurp is for instance a possible word in Norwegian, whereas *bnurp is not. This course deals with these principles, and with the structure of sound systems cross-linguistically. The development of practical skills such as the systematisation, analysis and presentation of phonological data will also be central to the course.
