KVI-2513: Building Conservation Work Load

The course provides a broad insight into the theory, methods, and practice of building preservation. | Contents
The course will provide a general overview of the theory, methods, and practice of building preservation. This includes for example the following topics:
- Preservation theory, ideology and criteria
- Legislation, especially the Act Concerning the Cultural Heritage and The Planning and Building Act
- Building registration
- Simple measuring and condition evaluation (practical training)
- Knowledge of materials, especially rock and wood
- Building preservation in practice - restoring different parts of a building
- Usage evaluation - limits of endurance and possibilities
- Financing
The student must have completed the three first semesters of the bachelor programme in art science, or have an equivalent education.
A good understanding of Norwegian and English is recommended. | Form of teaching
Teaching, periods of individual study and exam preparation are distributed over the 21 weeks of the semester. Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, inspections, and group work. | Exam and assessment
The coursework requirement is a short paper of maximum 6 pages, discussing the situation of the preservation and use of 2 given buildings. The paper is to be submitted in week 14.
This requirement is assessed with pass/fail.
The examination consists of a 4-hour written exam.
Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. | Date(s) of written examination
