Contents
Modern society is, according to central social scientists, divided into different fields, systems or discourses such as science, politics, religion, sexuality and love etc. Pierre Bourdieu uses field division, Niklas Luhman talks about the different function systems of society, and Michel Foucault operates with various discourses. Every field, system or discourse has a degree of autonomy, and communication and action follows its own logic.

This differentiation of society creates a need for interaction across fields, systems and discourses and for mutual adjustments. Is it, however, possible to have integration in complex, modern societies without destroying the autonomy of the fields or systems? This question constitutes one of our major practical and theoretical challenges.

The purpose with this course is to compare the various theories as providing different starting points for empirical analysis of individual fields, systems or discourses, and relations among them.

Subjects for the lectures:
· What kind of society is modern society?
· Field analysis according to Pierre Bourdieu
· System analysis according to Niklas Luhman¿s systems theory
· Discourse analysis according to Michel Foucault

Form of teaching
Lectures and seminars.

Exam and assessment
An essay of 5-7 pages written according to requirements. The essay can have basis in a research design for an empirical investigation connected to one or more of the theoretical perspectives.

Grading: A-E = passed, F = Failed.
The course is open for re-sit examination early in the following semester.
