GEO-3105: Advanced Petrology Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical subject. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master''s level. | Language of instruction Norwegian, english by request | Examination semester Spring | Contents Teaching will be arranged as a project, and the students will be working on natural magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Firstly, a thorough introduction to magmatic and metamorphic processes will be given, including projections and phase diagrams, and Schreinemakers phase theory. The main focus will be on ultra-metamorphism, including factors controlling partial melting of continental crust. An introduction to practical methods for the determination of geological temperatures and pressures (geothermobarometry) will be given. The compulsory exercises will focus on the study of metamorphic and ultra-metamorphic rocks in thin section. The students will have to describe the rocks and present the mineral assemblages in suitable diagrams. They will also perform chemical analyses of minerals and use these for calculations of geological temperatures and pressures. Laboratory experiments on partial melting of rocks will be performed at the high pressure laboratory at the department, and the experimental products will be analyzed.
| Recommended previous qualifications GEO-2001 Mineralogy, GEO-2004 Petrology, GEO-3103 Geochemical Thermodynamics | Form of teaching 30 h lectures; 30 h practical exercises. | Exam and assessment 4 h written exam. Students will be evaluated through the practical exercises including journals. Admission for final examination requires approved journals. Letter grade (A-F).
