This subject is a compulsory core module in the bachelor degree study course in History. It is a free choice subject that forms part of the subject collection History for Teachers (60 points). It serves as a subsidiary subject for Archaeology, Documentation Studies and Cultural History.
Contents
This course provides an introduction to the most central basic questions in historical studies, and an introduction to the research history of historical studies (historiography). In addition, students will encounter existing source categories through work on older periods of history (the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century), such as official deeds (letters from the Middle Ages, diplomer), cadasters (books concerned with land rights, jordebøker), census information and tax lists, as well as parliamentary books and legal documents (skifteprotokoller). The main emphasis will be (1) in which areas different types of source material can contribute to the process of illumination, and (2) where the different source series are to be found/how to discover them and their contents. An introduction is provided to the form and structure of diplomer and society-related consequences of the breakthrough in the use of written communication. In the case of the other types of source material, features of their original situation will be presented. This course offers an introduction to the reading of Gothic manuscript (new Gothic paleography, current in Central Europe and the North from c.1500 until the second half of the nineteenth century).
