Several of the key stratigraphic localities on Spitsbergen will be studied in order to understand the Quaternary history of Svalbard and the Barents Sea region, e.g. Kapp Ekholm (Billefjorden), Linnédalen (outer Isfjorden), Poolepynten (Prins Karls Forland), Skilvika (Bellsund), Brøggerhalvøya and Kongsfjordhallet (Kongsfjorden). The focus of the terrestrial field studies will be on interpretation of sedimentary successions and geomorphology in order to reconstruct glacial history, sea level changes and palaeoclimatic variations. The students will re-examine published stratigraphies, and work up the results to a scientific report. There will also be studies of present day Arctic sedimentary processes and environments, glacial sediments and proglacial processes in the terrestrial marginal zones of modern-day glaciers, living and fossil biota, and discussions on dating methods applied to the successions. Through a biannual co-operation with the University of Tromsø (2001, 2003, etc.) the course will include studies of land-ocean linkages by means of seismic profiling and sediment sampling in fjord and continental shelf settings. The course takes place at UNIS in Longyearbyen, and with a research vessel to various localities on Svalbard. The course code at UNIS is AG-321.
