The aim of the course is to give the students an insight into the potentials of ethnographic film as part of research and dissemination processes. | Contents
The seminar will take a closer look at a number of films with a special emphasis on the role of these films within the research projects they form part of. An essential question will be how the films contribute to the social sciences? The films screened will give us specific empirical and analytical inlet to topics relevant to the social sciences, such as postcolonial education, resource management, migration, identity formation, and conflict management.
Film is a suitable tool for communication with different kinds of audiences. The people filmed constitute one kind of audience, while the academic world and the general public constitute others. What are the ambitions of the particular film in this respect? To what extent are the films able to engage different kinds of audiences? To what extent can ethnographic films contribute to empowerment?
The filmmaker will be present at several of the screenings. This will give us access to the considerations and the choices made during the different phases of the project and contribute to the quality of our discussions. | Form of teaching
The teaching will consist of lectures, film screenings, and discussions.There will be a total of 8 seminars of 3 hours each. | Exam and assessment
Requirement: Presentation of a film.
Examination: The exam paper (max. 10 pages) will be an analysis and discussion of one of the films chosen and presented in the seminar. The student will choose the topic for the paper and the approach to the problem. | Recommended reading/syllabus
