PSY-1001: Introduction to psychology Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction English and Norwegian. | Examination semester Autumn, Spring | Objectives This course is a required course for the bachelor''s degree in psychology, and is part of the evaluation process for admissions to the professional program in clinical psychology.
| Contents This course presents an introduction to psychology as a science, including the key questions, theories, and research results. This means that the course shall cover the most important contributions that psychology has made to the understanding of humans, but also to the understanding of the behaviors of other species. In contrast to PSY-1000, this course will have a greater focus on research and theory in order to deepen the students'' understanding of psychological phenomena. Furthermore, this course will present a picture of the full breadth of psychology. The contents of the course will largely follow the topics in a standard introductory psychology textbook.
| Form of teaching The course is comprised of lectures, plus seminars and demonstrations. Teaching depends to a high degree on the students'' preparation and activity. Seminars led by graduate students will supplement the lectures. These seminars are specifically tied to the textbook and the lectures.
Required Readings: Carlson, N.R., Martin, G.N., & Buskist, W. (2004). Psychology (2nd ed.). Harlow, UK: Pearson Education. (798 s.)
The entire book is a required reading, but exam questions based solely on "Cutting edge" and "Controversies in psychological science" sections will not be given.
Students are encouraged to orient themselves about psychological literature outside of the required reading. Recommendations for readings are made in connection with the lectures and on the course web page.
| Exam and assessment There will be three exams in PSY-1001. Two of the exams are multiple choice: One exam for section 1 (chapters 1-9) from the textbook and one exam for section 2 (chapters 10-18). (Three hours each). The third exam is a 5 hour short-answer test covering the whole book. The exam questions will be made by the Bachelor Committee. We refer students to check the course web page for some examples of how the questions will be formulated.
Within three weeks after the exam (multiple choice tests) the results will be posted. When the semester is finished, the results of all three exams will be totaled up and a final grade decided, using the scale of A-F. There will not be any opportunity to take a make-up exam until after all exams for the semester have been completed. Make-up exams will be offered during the following semester.
| Date(s) of written examination 02.06.2006, 23.05.2006, 03.03.2006 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Contact person/lecturer Svein Are Tjeldnes | Recommended reading/syllabus See homepage. | Course overlap PSYKGF1 -1 20 sp PSYKGF1 -H03 20 sp PSYKGF -H83 20 sp PSYKGF -1 20 sp PSYKGF1 -1 50 sp PSYKGF1 -1 60 sp | Homepage http://uit.no/psykologi/3246/
