We shall work with a selection of recent decadence novels, as well as relevant theory:
Novels: Tom Kristensen, Hærværk (Havoc), Djuna Barnes: Nattskog, Charles Bukowski, Post Office, Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho, Nick Cave, And the Ass Saw the Angel, Alexander Brenning, Trist som en matros (Sad as a Sailor), Michel Houellebecq, Plateforme (Platform) and Grethe Nestor: Kryp. Theory, complete works: Per Buvik: Dekadanse, Per Thomas Andersen: Dekadanse i nordisk litteratur, Brian McHale: Constructing Postmodernism, Trond Berg Eriksen: Nietzsche og det moderne.

Emphasis will be placed on the issue of decadence as an individually and culturally conditioned phenomenon. The textual analysis will be more thorough and the use of relevant theory will be more comprehensive than in the corresponding course at the 2000-level.

The course runs throughout the semester, with scheduled periods for study and writing. Method of teaching: seminars, with emphasis on student participation. The students must write at least two minor assignments within the duration of the course. Tutoring will be given during the course.
Exam and assessment
Portfolio assessment: a minor asignment and a ten days concluding home assignment (10-12-pages) form the basis for establishing an academic grade. Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. Exam language: Norwegian.
