Objectives
This elective course is designed for master students across the academic disciplines, who are interested in questions related to violence and conflict. It will conclude early in the semester to give the students the possibility to start their fieldwork (Master students also have the opportunity to follow this course in their forth semester). The lectures will be aimed at Master level students, but interested students at other levels are welcome to join.
Contents
Aim of this course is twofold. Firstly, it will provide an introduction to some of the most influential anthropological works on violence in the contexts of militant nationalism, ethnic conflicts, war and genocide. We will examine some of the earlier anthropological texts on violence and discuss these in relation to later developments within the field. An important part of these discussions will be to assess critically how different scholars choose to define and theorise violence and the ethical predicament behind such definitions and theories. Secondly, to consider challenges the study of violence poses to the anthropological method of participant observation. Some of challenges are common to fieldwork in general, while others are more specific to situations of violent conflict. This part of the course will place particular emphasis on recent ethical debates in relation to doing fieldwork in such contexts.
Form of teaching
The teaching is organised as ten lectures each of 2 hours, in the first half of the term (from start of term in January to mid February).
