The course aims to increase the understanding of travel literature as a genre in its own right and to familiarise the students with the theoretical and methodological problems relevant to travel literature and its history.
Contents
Travel literature has resurged in interest over the last twenty years and is no longer regarded merely as a historical or ethnological source, but as a genre in its own right with its own specific literary features. The boarder line between documentation and fiction is interesting in this regard and offers rich material for different approaches. In addition to Fridtjof Nansen¿s Paa ski over Grønland / The First Crossing of Greenland (1880) og Erlend Loe¿s L (L) (1999), a parody of / eulogy to (?) Thor Heyerdahl and the scientific journey, the course will focus on Knut Hamsun¿s I Æventyrland; oplevet og drømt i Kaukasien (In the Land of Adventure; experiences and dreams of Caucasus) (1903) as well as some recent and older travelogues. Recommended previous qualifications/courses: NOR-1110, NOR-1111 og NOR-1112, or equivalent. The syllabus is available in Norwegian, Scandinavian, and English.
